Do you know the difference between a gas strut and a damper?

Many customers come to us thinking that they need a gas strut when they actually need a damper and vice versa. In this blog post and the video below Matt Warne our MD explains the key differences between the two products.

What is a damper? 

Dampers are used to control or slow the position of an object. There are two types of dampers; compression and extension. A compression damper can be opened with little resistance, however, on closing the damper is controlling the speed at which the object closes, preventing it from any sudden movements and dropping. An extension damper behaves in the opposite way, meaning that resistance can be felt in the opening of the object. Watch the video below to see this movement in action.  

What is a gas strut? 

Gas struts are also known as gas springs, in the UK we tend to refer to them as gas struts, but the term is interchangeable usually depending on where you live. A gas strut uses the pressure within it to generate movement and push the lid open. Damping is used at the end of the stroke to slow the motion down.
