Gas Spring Terminology

Stroke – The maximum amount of travel of the rod.

How to measure a gas strut - Stroke – The maximum amount of travel of the rod

Extended length – The total length of the gas spring measured from centre-to-centre of the end fits. For a fixed force gas strut, the extended length typically ranges from 72mm to 1055mm. This is when the rod is in its relaxed state and fully extended.

Closed Length – The total closed length measured from centre-to-centre of the end fits.

In the case of fixed force gas struts, the compressed length is specifically 100mm, indicating when the rod is compressed into the cylinder, not in a relaxed state.

How to measure a gas strut - Closed Length– The total closed length measured from centre-to-centre of the end fits

Where no end fits have been specified then, the extended and closed lengths are measured from the rod end to tube end (excluding threads) as shown. This ensures accurate measurement regardless of the specific fittings involved.

By understanding these measurements and their definitions, users can better select the appropriate gas strut for their needs, ensuring optimal performance and fit for various applications.
