What do Locking Gas Springs – Blocklift do?
If you require height adjustment within a vehicle, or the ability to make adjustments to an application effortlessly and instantly, then a locking gas strut may well be what you require.
Our Blocklift range includes four products suited to a variety of applications.
BL1: Rigid in Extension
This gas spring locks the piston in extension giving total rigidity in extension, but will allow a few millimetres of movement in compression. Once a compressive load is released, the piston rod automatically returns to the initial position. These locking gas springs can be mounted in any orientation.
BL2: Rigid in Compression
This gas springs provides total rigidity in compression, but will allow a few millimetres of movement in extension. Once the extension load is released, the piston rod automatically returns to the initial position. These locking gas springs should be mounted rod down. However, it is possible to mount in any position, but this needs to be advised at the time of enquiry.
BL3: Spring Blocking (Elastic Locking)
These locking gas springs are ideal for applications where some comfort (cushioning or elasticity) is needed, even when the Blocklift is locked in position. Like the springs found in an office chair, when a load is applied to the locked gas springs in either extension or compression, the piston rod compresses a few millimetres. After a few millimetres it becomes harder to compress due to the increased pressure inside and holds locked in position. Once the load is released, the piston rod returns to its initial position. These locking gas springs should be mounted rod down.
BL4: Rigid in Extension and Compression
The BL4 locking gas springs is totally rigid in both extension and compression. It is available with or without an extension force, depending on whether you need the gas springs to control the application or if the application is controlled by an external mechanism. These locking gas springss can be mounted in any orientation.
How do the locking gas springs work?
Our locking gas spring can be stopped in any position. Fitted with a locking valve, they only allow movement when the release pin, located at the end of the rod, is depressed. This will usually be achieved by using a cable-operated release mechanism, or directly attached paddle.
Common applications locking gas springs include height and angle adjustment of seats on aircraft, buses, trains, specialist vehicles and on military vehicle seating. They are also used for providing controllable adjustment on hospital beds, physiotherapy tables and wheelchairs, as well as height risers for desks. Locking gas springs can be used on many different applications across such a wide range of industry sectors that their use is only limited by the design engineer’s imagination!

What sizes do you offer?
Gas struts are commonly referenced by their size. The sizes directly relate to the diameter of the rod and the tube, for example, an 8-23 in the Blocklift range will have a rod diameter of 8mm and a tube diameter of 23mm. The most common sizes for our locking gas struts are 10-28 and 8-23.
We also offer a wide range of bespoke sizes depending on your requirements.
